App Store to hit 50 billion downloads

50 Billion

That’s a 50 with nine zeroes behind. 50,000,000,000.

The App Store opened in July 2008 and hit the 100 million app downloads mark in two months. By April 2009 it hit its first billion mark. By Jan 2011 it hit the 10 billion mark.

If you’re the lucky one to download the 50,000,000,000th app, you could win a nice US$10,000 App Store Gift Card. If you happen to be the next 50 downloaders after the 50,000,000,000th, you can still win US$500 App Store Gift Card.

Alternatively, you can also enter this sweepstake without purchasing or downloading any app but fill up this form … but where’s the fun?

App store tops 40 billion downloads

Apple posted a press release to announce that App Store download has exceeded 40 billion times (excluding re-downloads and updates), of which nearly 20 billion times within 2012. That means on average, there are nearly 55 million downloads a day or nearly 2.3 million downloads per hour in 2012 alone.

App Store was officially opened on 11 July 2008 and from 10 million downloads within a week, to 40 billion downloads in less than five years.

With more than 775,000 iPhone apps and over 300,000 native iPad apps and App Store available in 155 countries, these numbers will just go up and up.

Apple® today announced that customers have downloaded over 40 billion apps*, with nearly 20 billion in 2012 alone. The App Store ℠ has over 500 million active accounts and had a record-breaking December with over two billion downloads during the month. Apple’s incredible developer community has created over 775,000 apps for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch® users worldwide, and developers have been paid over seven billion dollars by Apple.
